Grade 1 learning: equality games

Then Bonjour! This week the class has been continuing to explore the concept of equality. During our counting routines at the beginning of the math lesson, two students place as many magnets on the board as they can while the class counts up to 100 in a variety of ways. The board typically looks like this when we are done:
Then we have a discussion about ways to make both sides equal by moving magnets, adding new magnets, or removing magnets. The games practice this concept by comparing two numbers and ways to make them equal each other. Here is an example of a three-player game using Cuisenaire rods, after the players have made all sets equal:
The orange rod is 'ten', white is 'one', etc.
