Grade 3: composing and decomposing numbers
Bonjour! This is a classroom routine we have been doing at the start of many math lessons. A number is written on the board and students are told that this is the 'answer'. Their job is to think of what the 'question' could be. Everyone is expected to participate, and currently we get questions using addtion, subtraction, and multiplication. So this routine does work on operational sense as well, but I like to see how students break the number down when they come up with their questions for the number. This is an easy activity to do at home. Here is a photo of some student work, from a time I asked them to choose multiple numbers and make questions for them:
