This week we were modeling numbers using coloured rods of different lengths called Cuisenaire rods. Students were given a rod to begin with and their task was to find as many combinations of two rods that were the same length as the first rod. I then asked them to count how many squares each rod measured and to express their 'two car trains' using numbers. See a few examples here:
In the first picture, students began with a brown rod which measures 8 squares. The purple rod is 4 squares and two of them is the same length as the brown rod. To show they are different pieces, the students coloured in one and used diagonal lines to colour the other one.
The bottom picture started with an orange rod which measures 10 squares. The longer the rod, the more two-colour rod combinations are possible.
