Grade 2 learning - tangram puzzles and the rekenrek

Bonjour! This week we have been solving and creating tangram puzzles, along with starting our new unit on number sense. Tangrams are a set of seven plastic shapes. Here are some puzzle examples:

I thought it was interesting how these two butterflies were done with two sets of Tangrams. Notice the off-coloured shapes aren't the same.
We also introduced the rekenrek, which is a small tool for representing numbers and operations. It is great for comparing numbers to 5 and 10.
The beads slide to the left when you want to represent a number. This week we practiced showing numbers to 20 using these and also looking at a number on the rekenrek for only 5 seconds and saying what it was. We will continue with these next week. Au revoir!
