This week we explored measuring area ("l'aire") of photographs. Students were asked to estimate how many coloured squares would be needed to cover a photograph completely, and then check their estimate by placing coloured squares onto the photographs and counting them. Here is a 'measuring progression' starting with length, then the perimeter, and finally the area. All of these initial efforts were great learning opportunities for discussing what area means.
Finally we discussed how to decide which photo had the largest area, which had the next largest area, and which had the smallest area. They trimmed out the photos and glued them onto brown paper in the order of largest to smallest area, with the area recorded below.
