Grade 2 learning - addition and subtraction with the traditional algorithm

Bonjour! This week we have been continuing to learn and practice strategies for 2-digit addition and subtraction using our Rekenrek tools, 100's charts, number lines, grouping and ungrouping objects into/out of 10's, and the 'traditional algorithm' (put the numbers on top of each other, add/subtract the ones column, carry/borrow as needed, repeat for tens column). This method is how many of us were taught arithmetic. The message to students is that this is one strategy they can use, among many to choose from. Students need to be vigilant when using this strategy to check their answers for reasonability, as it is very easy to make errors using this algorithm.
